CHICAGO — Yankees fans clamoring for Jasson Dominguez (and that is not a small number) won’t be getting their way anytime soon.

That’s based on the comments made Friday morning by general manager Brian Cashman, who ultimately had the final call as the Yankees decided to leave the club’s top position prospect in the minors when rosters expanded last Sunday.

“It just comes down to what’s best to help win games,” Cashman said before the Yankees’ 3-0 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. “It’s as simple as that.”

Though there hardly is organizational unanimity on this point, the belief is that Alex Verdugo, who has been swinging the bat better of late, gives the Yankees the best opportunity to win.

“He’s played better,” Cashman said of Verdugo, who bounced back from an 0-for-19 stretch to go 15-for-44 in his last 12 games (although 13 of those hits have been singles and he has walked only twice in that span). “Obviously, there was a long stretch where he did not play as well as he’s capable of doing, but more recently he’s been [better].”

Verdugo, who had gone 38-for-213 (.178) in a 54-game stretch before his recent improvement, has played a consistently solid and at times very good leftfield, something the Yankees clearly value.

Dominguez consistently has hit in the minors since coming off the injured list with an oblique issue but has not been as strong in the field, according to multiple rival scouts assigned to the Yankees’ minor-league system.

“Jasson’s doing everything he needs to do right now,” Cashman said. “Verdugo’s playing, obviously, better baseball recently, and so the evaluations we’re having with our field staff and player development staff and front office staff is just what is going to give us the best chance to win. And as of right now, we’re staying pat with what we’ve got, but we’re always in the position to change our minds at some point, too.”

Of Dominguez’s defense, Cashman said: “I think Jasson’s a good defender. I think Verdugo’s a good defender. Ultimately, those are the things we’re trying to work through, and right now we’re staying on line.”

Cashman said he gets it when it comes to fans wanting to see Dominguez.

“Fans care about us winning, and if we’re not winning, they want something that potentially could change that up,” he said. “That’s the attachment. It’s no different than in any other sport. If something isn’t playing, as a unit, if it’s not playing up to your capabilities and there’s the possibility something might be better . . . I understand that.

“And that doesn’t mean our conversations [regarding Dominguez] aren’t taking place or have already taken place or continue to take place. They do. But we’re charged with deploying what we think is the best right now, and that’s what we’re doing. We certainly have the right to change at some point if we felt that was in our benefit, but right now, this is what we’ve got here and hopefully we can find a way to navigate some wins here in Chicago.”
