Cardinals QB Carson Palmer ruled out against Giants

It took facing a backup starting quarterback for the Giants to notch their first win of the 2013 season, but they had to wait until Week 7 for that to take place. This year, they get the big break in Week 2.

Carson Palmer, the Cardinals’ starting quarterback who threw for 304 yards and two TDs last week against the Chargers, will not play against the Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Palmer was limited in practice all week with a nerve issue in his right (throwing) shoulder and made the trip to New York for the game. According to the NFL Network, Palmer tried to warm up on Sunday morning but was unable to go.

Drew Stanton will get the start, his first since 2010. He has not played a game since that season with the Lions.

If his name sounds familiar to New York fans, it’s because Stanton was signed to be the Jets’ backup quarterback in March of 2012. A week later the Jets acquired Tim Tebow and Stanton requested his release or a trade from the Jets. A few days later he was traded to the Colts. After playing for the Colts in 2012 – or at least being on their roster; he never took the field – Stanton signed a three-year deal with the quarterback-hungry Cardinals in March of 2013. Several weeks after his arrival in Arizona, the Cardinals acquired Palmer who became their starter.

Oh, and that backup quarterback it took for the Giants to finally get a win last year? That was Josh Freeman of the Vikings. The Giants were 4-1 against backup quarterbacks in 2013, but the loss was against Nick Foles of the Eagles who became the full-time starter by the end of the season.

The other inactives for the Cardinals are Glenn Carson, Alex Okafor, Marcus Benard, Dave Zastudil, Darren Fells and Frostee Rucker.
