Rex Ryan steered clear of the Ray Rice incident, which culminated in the former Rutgers running back being suspended indefinitely by the NFL on Monday.

The Ravens terminated Rice's contract hours after a video surfaced on TMZ.com showing him knocking out his then-fiancée during a February argument inside an elevator at an Atlantic City hotel.

Ryan said he didn't see the video but acknowledged he knows Rice from his time as the Ravens' defensive coordinator. Ryan declined to speak about the incident or offer his take on domestic violence.

"I think the questions are better suited for Baltimore than me," he said.

Browns coach Mike Pettine -- Ryan's former defensive assistant in Baltimore and the Jets' previous defensive coordinator -- did talk about it. He said he understands why the Ravens released Rice.

"Deeply disturbing, especially as a father that has two daughters," Pettine said of the video. "There's just no place for that behavior in our society."

Pettine also said it would be difficult to coach Rice after watching him hit a woman.

"I wasn't surprised [the Ravens cut him] after watching it," he said.

Ryan said he hopes cornerback Dee Milliner (high ankle sprain) can suit up Sunday in Green Bay . . . Speaking of the secondary, Ryan still is miffed about the criticisms of his unit. "Shoot, I know we've got major issues there," he said sarcastically. "It's been talked about forever. But you never heard me talk about it. To me, the [Raiders] game went how we thought it would and how we wanted it to go. We emphasized to our DBs how we had to make sure we protected the vertical passing game and I thought our guys did a great job." . . . Asked about using return man Saalim Hakim as a blitzer and lining up linebacker Quinton Coples over receivers seven or eight times, Ryan joked: "There are more ways to skin a cat. I've been trying to tell you guys for a while."
