An eye-catching showcase feature at Thriftknd in Sag Harbor is an area that owner Brittany Rivkind calls the "denim library." Have you checked out any good jeans lately?
"When you walk in, we have a big denim moment," says Rivkind, 29, of Montauk. "It's just stacks and stacks and stacks of denim almost up to the ceiling. It’s all arranged by correct sizing."
Rivkind’s keen eye for elevated drama, detail and careful curation has been a signature at this vintage women’s boutique since opening in May 2022. She’s wanted to work in fashion since eighth grade.
"I started in 2019 on social media," says Rivkind, who spent a year at Savannah College of Art and Design before transferring to FIT in Manhattan. "I would take a photo of me wearing my clothing. I auctioned those pieces primarily on Instagram."
Her brick-and-mortar store is a destination for apparel (90% vintage, 10% small-brand contemporary pieces, she ballparked) and gift items — candles, sunglasses, hair clips, perfume, cards and journals.
Stocking the store with clothes she loves — she leans toward clothes from the 1970s, the ’90s and early 2000s — means that she’s a frequent flyer shopping. "I’m on planes a minimum of 48 times a year," she says. "I'm super picky in what I buy."
She doesn't source from one main place. "I have dealers that I work with now. They're all over the country, so they source for me. Diversity is key," Rivkind adds.
Price points vary, depending on the brands. Denim ranges from $165 to $295, tops sell for between $55 and $125, and shorts start at about $95. Boots "fly out the door," she says. They're priced at $185-$210. Gifts range from $6 to $150.
For Rivkind, the best compliment she receives is that the pieces she sells are in such great shape they look brand-new. "I carry pieces that are in very, very good condition," she says.
Rivkind plans to launch her shop website this summer. Her digital presence on Instagram, which has been a powerful tool for establishing and building her brand, will stay strong.
"Instagram has such a global reach. Without the relationship that I had with Instagram for the past few years, I don't think my store would be as successful as it is today."
