Lawsuits: Plainview restaurants overserved alcohol to Amandeep Singh, Roslyn man who killed 2 teen tennis stars in crash

Amandeep Singh killed their 14-year-old son in a 2023 wrong-way drunken-driving crash because three Plainview restaurants negligently served the Roslyn resident alcohol, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the parents of Drew Hassenbein, one of the boys who died.
The lawsuit, as well as a second one filed Wednesday by Hassenbein's parents, comes days after the parents of Ethan Falkowitz — who was also killed in the crash and like Hassenbein, a standout on the Roslyn High School varsity tennis team — filed a similar suit.
Mitchell and Jaime Hassenbein, of Roslyn, also allege in court filings that Singh’s father, Jagdish Singh, the owner of the truck involved in the crash, and Amandeep Singh's friend Prabhleen Virk, who, one of the suits alleges, "displayed grossly poor judgment by continuing to serve alcoholic beverages and/or cocaine to Amandeep Singh" on the night of the crash, also were culpable for the death of the teens.
Amandeep Singh, 36, pleaded guilty in January to being behind the wheel and driving the wrong way on North Broadway in Jericho on the night of May 3, 2023, when he crashed head-on into an Alfa Romeo carrying Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein. Both teens died at the scene.
Prosecutors said Singh hit speeds of up to 90 mph and had a blood-alcohol level of more than double the legal limit of 0.08% at the time of the crash.
The 18-year-old driver of the Alfa Romeo and another passenger survived.
Singh was sentenced on Feb. 8 to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and other charges.
The two lawsuits by the Hassenbeins focus on the driver’s night of drinking that led up to the crash, blaming three Plainview restaurants for continuing to serve Singh, as one of the court filings states, "despite it being clear that he consumed excess alcoholic beverages and/or was intoxicated to the extent that he could not and should not legally drive."
Singh started the night about 6 p.m. at the Social Play Haus on Express Street, where, according to the court filings, he stayed until just before 8 p.m. He next moved on to Iavarone Italian Kitchen + Pizzeria on Old Country Road, where he continued to order and be served alcohol, the suit alleges. About 9 p.m., Singh went to The Shed, also on Old Country Road, where his partying continued and was "grossly overserved to the point of being heavily intoxicated," according to court papers. He stopped in at Virk’s house at 9:37 p.m., one of the suits filed Wednesday says, where Singh drank more and did cocaine before getting behind the wheel of his father's 7,000-pound truck before the crash.
About 9:20 p.m., Singh drove the wrong way and hit the Alpha Romeo.
Neither the restaurants nor Jagdish Singh immediately responded Wednesday to requests for comment.
Virk declined to comment.
Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein, who both played varsity tennis despite still being in middle school, were coming from Buffalo Wild Wings, where they had been celebrating a win.
The lawsuits filed Wednesday cite violations of the state General Obligations Law and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law that prohibit the serving of booze to visibly drunken patrons.
"As we all know, people drive drunk," said Adam Polo, attorney for the Hassenbeins. "It should never be done. And in this day and age, it’s easier not to drive drunk, especially with Uber and Lyft. It’s important to hold establishments responsible if it’s found that they serve a visibly drunk person at their establishments."
