Shootings in Patchogue, Central Islip leave 2 teens with injuries, police say

Two teenagers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries following two separate shootings on Thursday in Patchogue and Central Islip, Suffolk police said.
Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, five underage males were involved in a physical altercation on Edwards Street near Rider Avenue in Patchogue, the Suffolk County Police Department said in a news release.
During the fight, a 14-year-old allegedly fired multiple shots at a 17-year-old, who sustained “serious but non-life-threatening injuries” and was transported to a hospital, the release said.
Detectives believe the shooter “inadvertently shot his own hand during the altercation,” the police department said. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and released.
Police said they recovered a 9 mm handgun “in the vicinity” of where the fight and shooting occurred. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
Detectives arrested the 14-year-old and charged him with first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said. The teen will “appear as a juvenile offender at First District Court in Central Islip” on Friday, the release said.
Earlier Thursday, around 12:30 a.m., an 18-year-old was shot in the arm by another male following an altercation in a gas station parking lot on Lowell Avenue in Central Islip, a police department spokesperson told Newsday via email. The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The alleged shooter fled the scene.
Another fight in Central Islip culminated in a teen involved in the altercation and a 25-year-old bystander suffering gunshot wounds last Thursday, Newsday reported at the time. A fight broke out that afternoon between a 16-year-old male and another person, who police said were members of two groups separately gathered near the pool of the Hawthorne Living apartment complex. Someone in one of the groups fired several shots, including those that struck the teen and a female bystander. Both were transported to hospitals in serious condition.
A Suffolk County Police Department spokesperson declined to comment on whether any of these shootings are related.
Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives are investigating both Central Islip shootings, and ask anyone with information to call 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
