Cops: Huntington building housing auto shops catches fire
A fire engulfed a building at 29 New York Ave. in Huntington, Suffolk County police said. Police arrived at the scene at 3:38 p.m.
Steve Silverman, deputy fire coordinator for the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services, said 12 departments responded to the blaze at the address that houses two businesses, Tom's Auto Refinishing and Collision and Hendrickson Car Care.
It took about three hours to get the blaze under control, with the building being extensively damaged Silverman said.
Silverman said a worker from one of the auto businesses was taken to Huntington Hospital with a minor leg injury.
Suffolk County Fire and Rescue deployed its Major Emergency Response Vehicle, MERV, that utilized its drone units to find hot spots in the building and help treat firefighters for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. The Huntington Community First Aid Squad also responded.
Silverman said the Town of Huntington fire marshal and the Suffolk County Arson Squad are investigating.
