A shark bit a teenage surfer late Wednesday afternoon in the waters off Fire Island, Suffolk County police said.

“A surfer suffered a minor bite and was able to walk out of the water,” police said in a statement.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded to the calls of a shark bite at approximately 5:45 p.m. Police said it was unknown whether the surfer, a male, required medical attention.

Police said the surfer was paddling approximately 20 yards off Kismet Beach when the shark bit his right foot, opening an approximately four-inch wound. No lifeguards were on duty at the time, police said. Saltaire Fire Rescue took him to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment.

Suffolk County police were looking for the shark via boat last night after police helicopters were unable to locate it in murky waters.
