Conflicting views of Empire Wind pause

The only way I can understand President Donald Trump halting Long Island’s Empire Wind project and his hostility toward renewables energy is as part of a vengeance agenda [“Empire Wind pause a blow to state,” News, April 28].

That agenda includes revenge against former President Joe Biden and the Democrats for supporting green energy; revenge for a wind turbine issue at one of his Scotland golf courses. That and his rewarding loyal oil and gas company backers, even though his tariff policies might drive down investment in U.S. fossil fuel development.

The excuse that Empire Wind hasn’t gone through enough environmental review is tissue thin, especially when compared with Trump’s recent executive order to mine virgin seabed, an act of wanton environmental destruction.

Gov. Kathy Hochul must fight for the Empire Wind project and the clean air and energy it would bring.

Not all Long Islanders are angered by the cessation of the awful Empire Wind project. In the short time since it’s been halted, no more dead whales or dolphins have washed ashore.

I am overjoyed that this expensive and dangerous endeavor has stopped. I remember when environmentalists cared about these lovely mammals, but apparently not so much anymore. I hope the project doesn’t ever resume.

LI police should monitor HOV better

Nassau and Suffolk county police would serve the public much better if instead of focusing on HOV dummies, a relatively minor offense, they pursued drivers who illegally cross into and out of HOV lanes across lines, outside permitted entry and exit points [“Man ticketed for driving with mannequin in HOV lane: police,” Long Island, April 25].

These drivers present a real danger to those of us who obey the rules and is another example of reckless driving and total disregard of our traffic laws. These HOV violators seem to be rampant on Long Island.
