A new bio of Michael Jackson, a collection of Best American stories and a memoir from Sandra Cisneros.

MJ: The Genius of Michael Jackson, by Steve Knopper. The King of Pop provided plenty of tabloid fodder -- the plastic surgeries, the child abuse scandals, the marriages -- during his more than four decades in show business. This biography, by a frequent Newsday contributor and contributing editor at Rolling Stone, doesn't shy away from the salacious but reminds us why Michael Jackson was, indeed, a "genius" entertainer. (Scribner, $27)

100 YEARS OF THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES, edited by Lorrie Moore and Heidi Pitlor. How to boil down a century of great writing to just 40 stories? That was the task for editors Pitlor and Moore (the latter a top-notch writer of short fiction herself). Culled from the enduring "Best American Short Stories" series, here are gems by Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Eudora Welty, James Baldwin, Flannery O'Connor, Junot Díaz, Jhumpa Lahiri and more. (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $30)

A HOUSE OF MY OWN: Stories From My Life, by Sandra Cisneros. The author of "The House on Mango Street," a classic Latina coming-of-age novel, has compiled newspaper and magazine pieces, lectures and other unpublished work to fashion the self-portrait of a rootless writer looking for home. Among the subjects touched on are the Chicago neighborhoods where she grew up, the Greek island of Hydra (where she completed "Mango Street") and visits to grandparents in Mexico. (Knopf, $28.95)
