Caracara in Farmingdale: Dinner, a show and a deal

Last night at Caracara Mexican Grill, I was happy to see that the two items I desired, tortilla soup and enchiladas Suizas, were offered on the special $19.95 menu. (I’d been prepared to pay $24.) My pal also decided on the soup, plus tacos de res, soft corn tortillas filled with grilled hanger steak (which would have cost $23 sin el especial).

First, though, we ordered guacamole. Our waitress wheeled over a little cart, asked us if we wanted mild, medium or hot, and proceeded to cut open avocados and mix their flesh with various seasonings. It may be a Mexican restaurant cliche, but I’m a sucker for tableside guacamole. It was delicious.

Then the soup showed up. In front of each of us was placed a wide, shallow bowl containing shreds of chicken, matchsticks of tortilla, crema and a wedge of avocado. Then the waiter hoisted a rustic-looking pitcher and poured the soup over the garnish. It was smoky, rich .?.?. delicious.

Our mains were just as good, if less dramatic. The enchiladas Suizas, filled with tender chicken and sauced with a creamy-tart tomatillo sauce were bright and fresh. As were the three overstuffed tacos.

The $19.95 menu is offered Sunday through Tuesday. Appetizers include salad with jicama, avocado and mango; fried chicken flutes; mushroom quesadillas and the tortilla soup. For mains, it’s the enchiladas Suizas or beef, chicken or fish tacos.
