When Sundae Donuts debuted as a walk-up window in Montauk in 2019, it quickly grew to a project that kept owner Michelle Tadross busy during the pandemic. After a burst of openings around the Island — once in Massapequa, Syosset, Hamptons Bays — the Huntington location  has closed its doors. Only two locations remain -- in Montauk and in Pier Village, New Jersey.

"We don’t have the necessary help to run it," said Tadross' father, Peter Ferraro, who answered the phone while "helping out" at the still-open Montauk store. "The place is wonderful, the customers are wonderful, we have no regrets."

Offering a selection of creative, yeast-raised doughnuts, it was the glitter-topped confections and trendy flavors such as Oreo, s’mores and Cinnamon Toast Crunch that lit up Instagram feeds from the colorful, clubby, graffiti-themed storefronts. There were make-your-own-doughnut kits and even a kids' summer day camp for those who wanted to stuff their own irresistible treats. Ice cream-based creations like "twists" (doughnut-infused ice cream with mix-ins and drizzles) and milkshakes joined warm doughnut sandwiches and DIY sundaes, churros and waffles, as well as cappuccinos and lattes.

Fans looking for their Sundae Donut fix can still get the decadent confections at the original Montauk location. Founder Michelle Tadross said she has "decided to focus on smaller footprints and franchising" and expects to introduce new locations soon.
