Verace, an Italian restaurant in Islip, is self-consciously hip, but also is distinctive and looks sharp, with a barrel-vaulted, artfully papered ceiling and streamlined, modern appointments suggesting a spree in Milan. (Jan. 23, 2010) Credit: Michael E. Ach

Two popular restaurants, Verace in Islip and H2O Seafood Grill in Smithtown, are preparing for winter with three-course, fixed-price menus.

The "first taste of winter" menu at Verace is $25; at H2O, $40. Both restaurants are part of the Bohlsen Restaurant Group. Drinks, taxes and tips are not included.

Appetizer selections at H2O include spinach salad with smoked chicken, a tempura roll with crab salad and avocado, a crisp calamari salad; and tandoori chicken skewers. Main dishes: lobster macaroni-and-cheese, grilled petite filet mignon, grilled branzino, and miso-glazed salmon. For dessert: warm pear spice cake and Key lime tart.

Verace's starters include caponata with roasted peppers, tomato-and-fennel salad, shellfish minestrone and cavatelli alla Bolognese. Main courses go from seafood stew and short-rib stew to chicken Marsala and penne alla puttanesca. Desserts: honey-pecan pie with vanilla gelato and cannoli with white-chocolate mousse and date-cream sauce.
