The man sought for questioning in the death of a college student from Westbury has been detained in Nicaragua, four days after her body was found at a residence off the Binghamton University campus, Nicaraguan police officials said Tuesday.

Orlando Tercero, 22, was wanted by authorities in Broome County in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend Haley Anderson, 22, a senior nursing student.

Francisco Diaz, commissioner of Nicaragua’s National Police, said he was taken into custody in the Central American nation and was being handed over to judicial authorities, according to The Associated Press.

Diaz did not say whether Tercero was being represented by a lawyer in Nicaragua.

Binghamton police Tuesday night said they did not have any information of Tercero’s detainment in Nicaragua.

Anderson’s family could not be reached Tuesday night.

Authorities with the Binghamton Police Department had said Tercero “had fled” from the United States to Nicaragua before police found Anderson’s body during a welfare check Friday.

Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell Jr., had said his office would present evidence to a grand jury and, if there was an indictment, ask Nicaragua, which does not have an extradition treaty with the United States, to return “the defendant back to Broome County.”

Police declared her death a homicide after an autopsy was conducted at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton on Saturday.

“This incident and the circumstances of the death was not a random act or involving the conduct of a stranger,” Binghamton police said in a statement.
