Authorities are investigating an incident in which John A. "Junior" Gotti, son of the late Gambino crime boss John Gotti, said he was stabbed Sunday in Syosset.
A law enforcement source told Newsday Gotti claimed he was trying to break up a fight between two strangers when he suffered the injury.
A spokesman for Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice said investigators from her office and police are doing a joint probe of the incident.
Police didn't identify Gotti by name Monday but said a 49-year-old man reported being stabbed in the abdomen at 9:45 p.m. Sunday in a CVS parking lot at 55 Cold Spring Rd. They said the man was in stable condition Monday.
Detectives got involved after a 10:19 p.m. call from a North Shore University Hospital official who was reporting the treatment of a stabbing victim.
A Nassau police spokeswoman Monday called the stabbing victim "uncooperative."
"The victim refused to answer any of the police questions," she said.
Police said there are no surveillance cameras outside the store. Gotti, of Oyster Bay, and his attorney couldn't be reached for comment Monday, and a hospital spokeswoman said there wasn't a patient listed under his name.
In 1999, Gotti pleaded guilty to racketeering, bribery and extortion. He got a sentence of six years and five months.
In 2009, Gotti's fourth trial in five years on racketeering charges ended in a mistrial after a federal jury in Manhattan couldn't reach a verdict.
Gotti, who has previously acknowledged being a member of the Gambino crime family, has said he renounced his life in the mob.
