Warren Uss, former Hicksville Fire Department captain, dies at 62

Warren Uss, former captain of the Hicksville Fire Department and commissioner of the Hicksville Water District, died July 15 at Plainview Hospital. He was 62.
He was born in Mineola, graduated from Hicksville High School in 1971 and went to work for his father at Oyster Bay Roofing and Siding. The next year he joined the Hicksville Fire Department as a member of Emergency Company 5, according to his family.
Uss quickly became involved with the company and was elected secretary in 1977.
"He wanted to serve his community," said his wife, Dianne Uss.
He met her in 1978 when she was a kindergarten teacher at Trinity Lutheran School in Hicksville and they married in 1984.
In 1989, Warren Uss became first lieutenant for the fire department and was elected to serve as captain in 1991 and 1992, according to his family.
He also served on the Bylaw, Welfare and Budget committees and was a member of the Exempt Benevolent Association, where he served as a trustee and was elected president in 1995 and 1996.
In 2011, Uss retired as an employee of the Hicksville Fire District, but remained a volunteer for the department, his wife said.
In 2008 he was elected to the Hicksville Water District Board of Commissioners and had served as chairman.
He was an active member of the American Water Works Association, Long Island Water Conference and the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners Association, Dianne Uss said.
When he wasn't working, Uss loved playing golf and would play wherever he could, she said, adding "he couldn't wait to go on vacation to play golf."
Uss also coached his daughter Alexandra's basketball team at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hicksville.
"He was loyal to his friends and family," his wife said. "He had a loving heart and a dry Irish wit."
In addition to his wife and daughter, Uss is survived by a sister, Maureen Uss, and a brother, John Uss, both of Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Services were July 18 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hicksville. Donations can be made to Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center at P.O. Box 246, Levittown, NY 11756.
