Cops: Jogger James Callaghan hit by two vehicles, killed in Laurel
A Jamesport man jogging in the predawn hours Thursday "in dense fog conditions" was killed in a traffic accident in Laurel, police said.
James Callaghan, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene on Route 25 near Laurel Lane after he apparently "was struck by two westbound vehicles," Southold Town police said in a news release.
"At this time it appears that Callaghan was laying in the roadway when struck by two vehicles," police said in the release. "Investigators are considering the possibility that Callaghan may have been struck first by a vehicle, which then left the scene, or that some type of medical condition or emergency caused him to be on the roadway."
Police are asking anyone with information about the 5:46 a.m. accident to call detectives at 631-765-2600.
