Driver critically hurt, passenger injured, in Smithtown crash, police say
Two women were injured, one critically, in a one-car crash that closed Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown for hours Sunday night into Monday, Suffolk County police said.
Police said the driver, identified as Tiffany Aldughmy, 21, of Port Jefferson Station, was in critical condition after being airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. Her passenger, whose identity was not released, was transported to Stony Brook by ambulance.
She suffered minor injuries, according to police.
The crash occurred between Old Willets Path and Meadow Road at 7:11 p.m. Sunday, and the road was reopened at 1:10 a.m. Monday. The crash scene was located near Caleb Smith State Park, police said.
Police said the vehicle, a 2000 Honda Accord, went off the road, struck a fire hydrant, a fence and a portable utility light before it overturned.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
