Greenport minivan crash leaves 1 dead, 6 injured, Southold police say

A Queens woman was killed and six others were injured when her minivan was struck head-on by a drunken driver Sunday morning in Greenport, Southold Town police said.

You Feng Yang, 51, of Flushing, who was driving a minivan with six adult passengers, was killed, according to police. She was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital about two hours after the 8:34 a.m. crash, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified as Glenn Zaleski, 36, of Greenport, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was expected to be arraigned Monday morning. An attorney for Zaleski could not immediately be reached.

The crash occurred on Route 48 near Moores Lane when Zaleski’s eastbound pickup crossed into westbound traffic and struck the minivan, Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley said.

The minivan passengers, all from Flushing, were identified by police as: Yan An Huang, 52; Wang Shilin, 52; Ping Li, 54; Yan Hong Han, 44; Tong Jun Qu, 46 and Chunxia Lui, 44.

The victims "suffered varying degrees of injuries including broken bones and severe bleeding,” police said in a news release.

Some of the injured were airlifted to Stony Brook, while others were taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, he said.

A stretch of Route 48 at the crash site was closed to traffic for several hours while police investigated the crash, Flatley said. The weather was not a factor as the road was dry, he said.

State Police assisted Southold police with accident reconstruction investigators.

Fire departments from Greenport, Southold and Cutchogue responded and evacuated some of the injured in ambulances, Flatley said.
