Montauk branch back in service after train hits vehicle, LIRR says

The Long Island Rail Road's Montauk branch was back in service, with some delays between Sayville and Patchogue, Tuesday morning after a vehicle was struck earlier by a westbound train east of Sayville, the railroad said.
"We are attempting to obtain buses. Customers are advised to expect some delays and cancellations," the railroad said in a tweet.
One person in the vehicle was taken to the hospital, a railroad spokesman said. The number of people in the vehicle and what caused the collision are not yet known, he added.
The collision led the railroad to cancel the 11:21 a.m. train from Babylon to Speonk, while the 10:22 a.m. train from Patchogue to Babylon was delayed, the railroad tweeted.
Jamie Atkinson, President of the Community Ambulance Company, which responded to the crash along with others, released a statement saying: "The vehicle and patient were heavily lodged under the train. It took 18 minutes for the patient to be extricated from the vehicle and the patient was transported in a Community Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital while being treated with Advanced Life Support in serious condition.
"No commuters onboard the train or the Train Engineer were injured as a result of the incident," the statement said.
