Official: All but 7 stores reopen at Smith Haven Mall
All but seven stores at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove reopened, though later than normal, Tuesday after a major water leak had closed the mall a day earlier.
Macy's, Macy's furniture and Sears reopened about 11:30 a.m. and the rest of the stores opened at 12:45 p.m., according to a mall spokeswoman.
The leak on Monday was reported about 3:30 p.m., and police and fire departments responded and evacuated the mall. There were no injuries.
It was closed about 4 p.m. as a safety precaution. The mall's regular weekday hours are 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The Suffolk County fire marshal's office was spearheading inspections Tuesday morning of the facility, which houses more than 140 stores and restaurants, the spokeswoman said.
She had no additional information regarding the condition of the building, the results of the inspections or how long the seven stores would remain closed.
They were Oakley, New York & Co., Littman Jewelers, GNC, Brighton Collectibles, Cinnabon and Wet Seal.
Also, the mall entrance by Sears will be closed until further notice, she said.
A spokesman from the office of John Bongino, head of the Town of Smithtown building department, said he was at the mall Tuesday morning.
Late Monday, Bongino had said management would need a structural engineer to determine the mall's structural safety. He said the inspection would be made in coordination with the town's building department.
