LI man rescued after boat overturns in Fire Island Inlet, police say

The Suffolk Marine Bureau rescued a Babylon man whose boat capsized in the rough waters of the Fire Island Inlet on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

A police helicopter guided the rescue effort after a Marine Bureau officer spotted the overturned hull of a 26-foot Everglades boat in poor weather conditions around 3 p.m. and called for assistance, Suffolk County police said in a news release.

The helicopter hovered above the boat where Greg Antolini, 54, was clutching to a life vest as two police rescue boats homed in on his location, police said. Antolini was returning from a fishing trip when his boat flipped over amid 8- to 10-foot waves, police said.

Police said they pulled Antolini out of the water and gave him first aid as they headed to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Fire Island. From there, the Babylon man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

The water was 57 degrees and a small craft warning was in effect at the time, police said.

Police said the boat was still in the water Tuesday night.
