The 85-year-old pedestrian critically injured in a hit-and-run Friday night in Melville has died of his injuries, Suffolk County police said.

Robert Hosking, of Melville, was struck by a vehicle on Route 110 near West Lyons Street at 8:50 p.m., but the driver fled, police said.

Police described the vehicle as green with damage to the passenger-side front end, side-view mirror and windshield and said the investigation is continuing.

Hosking was taken by Melville Rescue to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for internal injuries and multiple fractures. He died Saturday morning, police said.

Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about it to call Suffolk's Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

The death follows others that Newsday has reported on this year.

In April, an 81-year-old Bethpage man walking to work at a Levittown grocery store was struck and killed by an alleged drunken driver as he crossed Hempstead Turnpike. Also in April, a pedestrian died after a car struck him on East Park Avenue in Long Beach.

In May, a Port Washington woman died after a box truck hit her in a marked crosswalk on Waterview Drive near Soundview Drive. Last weekend, a 13-year-old girl with Down syndrome was killed crossing Hempstead Turnpike by a hit-and-run driver.
