A trio of Suffolk County police officers fresh out of the academy helped deliver a baby girl Monday evening in a car parked on the side of Sunrise Highway in Shirley after a woman went into labor, the department said.

Officers Joseph Lacey, Brendan Nappi, and Jonathan Verity from the Seventh Precinct responded to a 911 call from the woman around 6:11 p.m. as she was in active labor inside a Honda Accord parked on the shoulder of Sunrise Highway near William Floyd Parkway, the Suffolk Police Department said in a news release.

When they pulled up to the Honda, the officers helped the woman, 37, deliver the baby girl and wrapped the newborn in a blanket, according to police.

All three officers graduated from the Suffolk County Police Academy on Friday, the department said.

Members of the Shirley Community Ambulance arrived shortly after the birth and transported the mother and daughter — both healthy — to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to police.
