Crash on LIE near Exit 66 in Yaphank kills teenager, Suffolk police say

A Riverhead teenager was killed Monday when a vehicle driven by her cousin crashed into a car on the Long Island Expressway in Yaphank, hit a guardrail and flipped over an embankment, Suffolk police said.

Katherine Sajbin, 18, was sitting in the back seat of a 2004 Jeep about 2:20 p.m. as it headed east on the LIE near Exit 66 before striking a 2018 Alfa Romeo, according to police. Sajbin and her mother, Violeta Sajbin, 40, and sitting in the front passenger seat, were both ejected from the Jeep, according to detectives from the Sixth Squad.

The Jeep ultimately landed on the expressway's service road.

Katherine Sajbin was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Franklin Eduardo Sajbin, 22, the Jeep's driver, Violeta Sajbin and her daughter Edith, 12, all of Riverhead, were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The driver of the Alfa Romeo, David Cohen, 55, of Old Bethpage, was not injured, authorities said.

Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check.
