A two-car accident injured three people, including a 73-year-old man seriously, and forced the temporary closure Tuesday of Jericho Turnpike in Elwood, police said.

A Jeep Liberty driving westbound on Jericho near Eldorado Drive at about 10:15 a.m. collided with another vehicle, driven by a man, 73, a police spokeswoman said.

The man had serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The driver and the passenger in the Jeep were taken to Huntington Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Investigators at the scene closed westbound Jericho Turnpike for several hours. The road has since reopened.
