Budget may force FDNY to shutter 20 companies, 8 in Brooklyn

Because of budget cuts, the FDNY may shut down 20 fire companies — with almost half in Brooklyn — according to a draft of the proposal obtained by NY1.

Eight proposed closures are in Brooklyn, followed by four in Queens, three each in Manhattan and the Bronx, and two in Staten Island.

The companies were selected based on a number of factors, an FDNY spokesman said, including response times and workload. He added that it's still just a draft, and that's there no timeframe of when it could be finalized or when the closures could happen.

Brooklyn borough President Marty Markowitz said he was "flabbergasted" that so many closings were in Brooklyn.

"If there is any serious thought being given to closing these houses, it needs to be extinguished like a three-alarm fire," he said.

- Engine 26 220 West 37th St.

Queens:
- Engine 294 101-20 Jamaica Ave.
- Engine 328 16-19 Central Ave.

Staten Island:
- Engine 157 1573 Castleton Ave.
- Engine 161 278 McClean Ave.

Brooklyn:
- Engine 206 1201 Grand St.
- Engine 218 650 Hart St.

Bronx:
- Engine 46 460 Cross Bronx Expressway
- Ladder 53 169 Schofield Ave.
