Wrestling star Darren Young has become the WWE’s first openly gay wrestler, telling reporters on Thursday that he’s gay and “very happy.”
When asked whether a gay wrestler could succeed in the hyper-masculine world of professional wrestling, Young told TMZ.com: “Absolutely. Look at me.”
“I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay,” he told the gossip site while walking through Los Angeles’ LAX airport.
He added: “And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”
The WWE voiced its support for Young, telling TMZ that it is “proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality.”
Fellow wrestler and WWE champ John Cena voiced his own support, telling TMZ it was “wonderful.”
“Congratulations for him for actually finally doing it,” Cena said.
