A Queens man suspected in the slaying of his girlfriend and their two toddler daughters told police that he kissed both children and asked them for forgiveness before he stabbed them to death, a top prosecutor said Wednesday.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that Miguel Mejia-Ramos, 29, who was captured without incident late Monday in Texas, gave a statement to police in which he described the way he stabbed Deisy Garcia, 21, who police described as the suspect's common law wife, and their two daughters Daniela Mejia, 2, and Yoselin Mejia, aged 1.
Brown disclosed the suspect's statement as he announced that Mejia-Ramos had agreed to waive extradition and return to New York to face first degree murder charges.
"I've seen a lot in my 23 years as District Attorney but there is nothing that disturbs me more than seeing young children--in this case mere babies--as homicide victims," said Brown.
Mejia-Ramos was expected to arrive back in the city as early as Wednesday escorted by detectives from the 103rd Precinct. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charges on Friday, said a spokeswoman for Brown.
Brown said that Mejia-Ramos is accused of "a particularly horrific and brutal crime" that took place sometime between last Saturday and Sunday. Brown said that Mejia-Ramos snapped when, after an evening of drinking beer on Saturday, he returned to the couple's home on Sutphin Boulevard and saw a photo on Facebook of Garcia with another man.
Mejia-Ramos grabbed a knife from a butcher block and allegedly began to stab Garcia as she woke up, continuing to stab her as she fled to another room. Mejia-Ramos then turned his attention to his daughters, said Brown, adding that a bent knife and a bloody knife handle were found near Garcia's body.
