THE SCOOP Formerly primarily a summer destination, Lido Beach has in recent decades become a thriving year-round home to a tightly knit community of people who want to live near the sea.

"It's also pretty centrally located to Manhattan: a 50-minute train ride or drive," said Matthew Hazan, of Compass Greater NY, a 20-year resident.

People move to Lido Beach for the peace and serenity of living near the ocean, Hazan said, adding "it's also more convenient than the Hamptons, people are finding out now."

About 2/3 of the hamlet's 1,200 households are year-round residents, said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin.

"It's such a great place to live and raise your kids," said Clavin.

Beyond its 4 miles of beach, Lido Beach has the championship 18-hole Lido Beach Golf Course, two marinas and Marvel Frozen Dairy, a 73-year-old family run institution.

There's Lido Beach West, a lesser known beach that's popular with surfers, Lido Beach and Malibu town parks and Nickerson Beach Park. Point Lookout is just to the east; Long Beach lies to the west.

You'll often see residents walking the beach and riding their bikes along Lido Boulevard.

"It's such a local throwback feel," Clavin said.

A favorite of hikers and birdwatchers, Lido Beach Passive Nature Area boasts 2,200 acres of wetlands, 40 walkable acres and a sanctuary for many rare birds.

Once an uninhabited sandbar, Lido Beach, like neighboring Long Beach, was made accessible by the channel dredged by state senator and real estate magnate William Reynolds beginning in 1907. Envisioning a resort community, Reynolds built the Moorish-style Lido Beach Hotel, but due to the Great Depression, never realized his dreams.

In the 1960s, residents fought off development of multi-story apartment buildings and other than a few bathing clubs and the iconic hotel — featured in Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" and now a condo development — Lido Beach has remained almost exclusively residential.

Homebuyers will find a variety of home styles, including high ranches, splanches, split levels, country ranches and contemporaries, with prices starting at $875,000 and going up to $3 million for a four-bedroom home with ocean and Manhattan skyline views.
