Mizu II Asian fusion restaurant opens in North Bellmore

A popular Asian fusion restaurant from Farmingdale has expanded, opening a new location in North Bellmore. And the sushi they're preparing is surprisingly good for the casual takeout setting.
Mizu II opened in February in the front cap of a shopping center anchored by Stop & Shop. It's a spinoff of the Mizu restaurant that opened in 2018 on Melville Road in Farmingdale. Owner Frankie Qiu said he's looking to expand with a third restaurant, in Bellmore, that is a sit-down experience with a bar. He is particularly interested in seasonality and sourcing of the fish, he said, and has experience working as a fishmonger at the Fulton Fish Market in the Bronx. Qiu lived in Japan for three years.

The menu in North Bellmore is pared down compared to the large pan-Asian selection of the original, but the place still offers everything from sushi to teriyaki bowls, poke bowls, hibachi, pad Thai and ramen. A small sushi counter at the front features fish imported from Tokyo's Toyosu market.
It might not travel well, but a madai carpaccio ($13) from the appetizer menu features delicate strips of red snapper sashimi in a tangy brown sauce. The minerality of the fish is amplified by the salty sweet soy flavor, making it a standout dish, despite the fact that it is served in a plastic takeout box.
Sushi rolls are also on the delicate side, with a fish-to-rice ratio that is higher on fish. The yellowtail scallion roll is a solid bet for $6. But there's also a large selection of special rolls between $13 and $15. It's on the smaller side, but the Dancing Eel roll ($14) is stuffed with hot and crispy shrimp tempura, and topped with flaky eel in its viscous sweet sauce. It's all really satisfying. If I lived close by, I'd be here once a week.
