Musical about Joy Mangano’s life to become a Broadway musical

Jennifer Lawrence won a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Joy Mangano in the 2015 movie “Joy.”

Now, we ask: Who will play her on Broadway?

Producer Ken Davenport announced on Tuesday that he was developing a musical about the St. James entrepreneur who’s sold billions of dollars worth of products such as the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers to consumers all over the world via retail venues including the Home Shopping Network.

Mangano, of course, wouldn’t mind seeing Lawrence in the role, though she also thinks Syosset’s Idina Menzel would be great “if we are dreaming,” she said in an email from Chicago, where she’s attending the International Home and Housewares Show.

Mangano said the show would be based on her entire life, not just the film. “Many people can relate to my struggle even if their circumstances are different . . . I think people connect to my story because it is so relatable,” she said. “Hey,” she mused, “there could even be a really great sitcom spinoff.”

Mangano has not had success with all her ventures. Last month, she closed her elegant Huntington restaurant, Jema, less than two years after its ballyhooed opening.

Davenport, a producer of “Once on This Island” and “Kinky Boots,” said in a statement that Mangano’s journey from divorced mom to wildly successful businesswoman “was made for the stage. If she didn’t exist, I would have tried to invent her.”

The project seems to be in the early development stage, with no word yet on the creative team or timing. But that doesn’t dim Mangano’s excitement. “As a Long Island girl, I loved Broadway. It was the treat of the century to see a Broadway play. To be an actual subject of one is surreal.”
