On Sunday, we went into Manhattan to meet R.J. Palacio, the author of “Wonder” and “Auggie and Me: Three Wonder Stories,” among other great books. We met her at Symphony Space and she was part of a group of authors who were there to celebrate Beverly Cleary’s 100th birthday.

We were nervous and excited to meet her. None of us had ever interviewed a famous person before. It felt really cool meeting R.J. She was very nice and we liked her. She was even nice enough to autograph something for each of us. We got to ask R.J. our questions. We really were anxious to know her feelings about “Wonder.” She helped us to fully understand the meaning of the book. R.J. explained to us that the book is a good learning experience for some people. We agreed — because kids see things they are uncomfortable with and this book helps them feel a bit more at ease approaching someone that is different. We felt very grateful getting to meet a famous author. If you ever meet R.J. Palacio, do not be shy because she is a very nice person. Our interview will be in a future edition of Kidsday!
