Savion Glover, Tony Goldwyn to co-direct 'Pal Joey' revival on Broadway

"Pal Joey," the classic Rodgers and Hart stage musical that made a star of Gene Kelly when it opened in 1940, is returning to Broadway for the 2022-23 season in re-imagined production co-directed by Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn.

The show, about a small-time nightclub performer who becomes involved with a wealthy socialite to advance his career, introduced a number of musical standards including "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and "I Could Write a Book." The revival will incorporate a number of other hits from the Rodgers and Hart songbook including "There's a Small Hotel," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "Falling in Love With Love" and "My Heart Stood Still."

Glover will also be doing the choreography, and the book will be written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Richard LaGravenese. Casting will be announced at a later date.

In related news, singer-songwriter John Legend, who performed with cast members from The Temptations musical "Ain't Too Proud" at last month's Tony Awards, announced on Monday that he and his partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorious from Get Lifted Film Co. have joined the show's producing team. "Ain't Too Proud" returns to Broadway on Oct. 16.
