Hennings received his bachelor’s degree from Providence College in Rhode Island in 1983 and his law degree from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1986. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1987 and to the U.S. District Courts, Eastern and Southern districts in 1989.
